2018 Senate District 1 and Assembly District 42 Special Elections

The Governor ordered special elections in State Senate District 1 in northeast Wisconsin and Assembly District 42 in south central Wisconsin to fill the seats held by the Senator Frank Lasee and Representative Keith Ripp, who resigned.

Primary Election: Tuesday, May 15, 2018

Fall 2018 Election, November 6:

  • Governor and Lt. Governor
  • Attorney General
  • Secretary of State
  • State Treasurer
  • U.S. Senator
  • Representative in Congress
  • State Senator (odd-numbered districts)
  • Representatives to the Assembly (all districts), and 
  • County offices of Sheriff, Clerk of Circuit Court and Coroner (where applicable). 

Candidates can now circulate nomination papers. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on June 1, 2018.

  • Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice
  • Court of Appeals Judge Districts I and IV, and
  • Circuit Court Judge. 
  • Constitutional Amendment to Eliminate Office of State Treasurer

Voter Photo ID Required

The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed the photo ID provisions of 2011 Wisconsin Act 23. A photo ID is now required to receive a ballot in all special and regular elections. Learn more about photo ID and voting here, and visit the Bring It to the Ballot website.

New Free State ID Card Policy for People without Birth Certificates

The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles has a new policy to help people get a free state ID card or document that can be used for voting after just one visit to the DMV, even if they don't have a birth certificate or other documentation.
